What "ready for AI shopping agents" actually means
AI shopping agents are assistants such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini and AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity that research products and, more and more, help people buy them. In 2026 the major platforms opened direct sales paths for merchants:
- Shopify Agentic Storefronts puts products from eligible Shopify stores into ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode, Copilot and other AI channels, and is enabled automatically for eligible stores. Shopify Catalog structures the product data those channels receive.
- Google's Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), announced on January 11, 2026, powers a checkout button in AI Mode and Gemini for eligible listings, with Merchant Center as the product data source.
- Microsoft Copilot Checkout launched in the United States on January 8, 2026, and Shopify merchants were enrolled automatically after an opt-out window.
In every case the agent works from data about your products (a catalog, a feed, structured data on the page), not from a human looking at your store. Being "ready" means that data is complete, matches your live pages, and leads to a working checkout.
The readiness checklist
Use this table as your audit sheet. The middle column tells you where to look in Shopify; the same checks apply to other platforms.
| Area | What to check | Where to look (Shopify) |
|---|---|---|
| Price and currency | The price an agent reports matches the price on the product page, in the right currency for the shopper's country | Products > [product] > Pricing; Settings > Markets |
| Availability | Out-of-stock items are not presented as available, and the reverse | Products > [product] > Inventory |
| Variants | Each size or color has its own price, stock and identifier | Products > [product] > Variants |
| Structured data | The page has Product JSON-LD and it agrees with what the page shows | Online Store > Themes > Edit code; SEO apps |
| Product content | Every product has a clear title, an image and a description long enough to answer basic questions | Products |
| Trust pages | Refund policy and shipping policy are published and reachable | Settings > Policies |
| Agent catalog | Your store's catalog is reachable by agents and returns results for real product searches | The Agentic page in your admin (Sales channels > Agentic) |
| Cart to checkout | A cart built from a product link reaches checkout with the same item, variant, quantity and tracking parameters | Test it yourself on the storefront |
| Crawler access | You have not blocked the AI crawlers you want to be found by | Your /robots.txt file |
How to run the check by hand
- Pick five products: a best seller, one on sale, one with many variants, one that is out of stock, and one recently added.
- Ask the assistants. In ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity, ask for the product by name and your store name. Write down the price, the stock status and the link each one gives you.
- Compare with the live page. Open each product page in a private window. Any difference in price, currency, variant or stock is a problem to trace.
- Look at the structured data. Paste the product URL into Google's Rich Results Test and compare the
priceandavailabilityit finds with the page. Two Product blocks with different prices usually means the theme and an SEO app both add one. - Check the policies. In Shopify admin, go to Settings > Policies and confirm the refund and shipping policies are filled in, not left blank.
- Test the cart. Open a product link with a tracking parameter (for example
?utm_source=chatgpt), choose a variant and a quantity of 2, add to cart and go to checkout. Stop before paying. Check that the variant, quantity and parameter survived. - Open the Agentic page in your Shopify admin. Since May 2026 Shopify shows which AI channels are active, which queries your products appear for, and recommendations to improve product data.
- Read your robots.txt. Visit
yourstore.com/robots.txtand make sure you are not disallowing crawlers you want, such as OpenAI'sOAI-SearchBot. See our guide on AI crawlers and robots.txt.
One-time scanners vs ongoing monitoring
A one-time check tells you where you stand today. Shopify offers a free scanner, the Commerce Readiness tool, launched in April 2026, that scores a store URL across 31 checks in areas such as product schema, AI discoverability, trust signals and transaction readiness. It is a good first step, and if you only want a snapshot of your setup it may be all you need. We compare the two approaches in AI Sales Assurance vs Shopify's readiness scanner.
What a snapshot cannot tell you is whether the price an agent quotes tomorrow still matches your page. Most problems we see are not setup problems but drift: a sale ends but a hard-coded JSON-LD block keeps the old price, a variant sells out, an app rewrites a title, a theme update drops a field. Stale price and stock data has been cited as a central failure in early agent checkout rollouts. That is why the check needs to repeat.
How AI Sales Assurance runs this check for you
AI Sales Assurance is a read-only scanner. It compares what AI shopping agents receive about your products with your real product pages and explains, in plain language, what to fix. It checks:
- price and currency mismatches, and stock or availability mismatches;
- missing JSON-LD, or JSON-LD that disagrees with the page (often a hard-coded block or an SEO app);
- offer and claim mismatches, variant and title mismatches, and missing or broken product links;
- incomplete product data such as a missing image or a very short description;
- whether an agent catalog is reachable, whether agentic capabilities are announced, and whether agent searches return results;
- missing refund policy, missing shipping policy and missing llms.txt;
- the cart-to-checkout handoff: lost item, changed variant, changed quantity, lost
utm_sourceorref. The test always stops before payment; no order is placed.
It never changes your store and collects no customer data. It does not check robots.txt, so do step 8 above yourself. You can run a full free check without a card; paid plans repeat it daily or every six hours and alert you with evidence when something drifts.
What to fix first
- Price, currency and stock errors: these cost you sales and trust directly.
- Cart and checkout handoff problems: an agent that sends a buyer to the wrong variant loses the sale.
- Conflicting structured data: remove duplicate or hard-coded Product blocks.
- Missing policies: Shopify lists completed store policies among the requirements for AI channels.
- Thin product content: titles, images and descriptions that let an agent answer real questions.

Run my free checkFrequently asked questions
What is an agentic commerce readiness check?
It is an audit of whether AI shopping agents can find your products, read accurate price, stock and variant data, find your policies, and send a buyer to a working checkout.
Is Shopify's free readiness scanner enough?
It is a useful one-time snapshot of your setup across 31 checks. It does not keep watching whether the price and stock agents receive still match your pages day after day.
Do I need to do anything for my Shopify store to appear in AI channels?
Shopify Agentic Storefronts is enabled automatically for eligible stores. You still need accurate product data and completed policies, and you can review channels on the Agentic page in your admin.
Does a readiness check place test orders?
It should not. AI Sales Assurance tests the cart up to checkout and always stops before payment, so no order is created.
How often should I check my store?
Re-check after any price change, sale, theme update or new app. Stores that change prices or stock often benefit from a daily automated check.
