What UCP is
Google announced the Universal Commerce Protocol on January 11, 2026, at the NRF retail conference. It was developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart. The goal is to let AI agents handle discovery, checkout and post-purchase steps through one standard instead of a custom integration per agent. Google says UCP works alongside other protocols such as Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), Agent2Agent (A2A) and Model Context Protocol (MCP).
For shoppers, the visible result is a Buy button on eligible product listings in AI Mode and Gemini. Payment runs through Google Pay with details saved in Google Wallet, and the merchant remains the seller of record.
Timeline so far
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| January 11, 2026 | UCP announced at NRF with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart |
| March 2026 | Merchant Center documentation for the native_commerce product attribute published |
| May 2026 | A Buy button was spotted in standard Google Search results, outside AI Mode, for an eligible retailer |
| September 2026 | Google emailed Merchant Center users that eligible Shopify products are automatically included in native checkout |
How Shopify stores are enrolled
Shopify supports UCP natively. In late September 2026, Google told merchants: to be eligible, products must be published on your Shopify storefront and available in Merchant Center, whether synced through Shopify's Google & YouTube channel or another feed. Eligible products are included automatically, with nothing to set up.
As reported, this enrollment applies to US-based merchants selling to US customers. Google's own help page also refers to Canada and Australia for participating merchants, and Google has said it plans to expand. Check Google's Merchant Center help page for your country.
To turn it off, Google points merchants to the Shopify admin under Sales channels > Agentic. Turning off native checkout does not hide your products: shoppers can still find them in AI channels and are sent to your online store to buy.
Who does what: UCP, Merchant Center and Shopify
Three pieces work together, and it helps to know which one to look at when something goes wrong:
| Piece | Role | What you manage there |
|---|---|---|
| Google Merchant Center | Source of product data for Google surfaces, including AI Mode and Gemini | Product data quality, diagnostics, shipping and returns settings |
| Google & YouTube channel (Shopify) | Syncs your Shopify products to Merchant Center | Which products sync, sync errors, account connection |
| UCP | The standard that lets Google's agent hand the purchase to your checkout | Nothing directly: Shopify supports it for you |
| Agentic page (Shopify) | Controls AI channels and native checkout | Turning native checkout on or off, channel insights |
| Your product pages | What the shopper sees after clicking, and what Google crawls | Visible price, stock, structured data |
Merchants not on Shopify must meet Google's UCP requirements, submit the interest form, complete a technical implementation, and set up a Google Pay & Wallet Console account. Only listings using the native_commerce attribute with checkout eligibility show the Buy button.
Step-by-step: check your setup
- Google & YouTube channel: in Shopify admin, open Sales channels > Google & YouTube. Confirm it is connected to the right Merchant Center account and that products are syncing without errors.
- Merchant Center diagnostics: in Merchant Center, open the products overview and look for disapproved or limited items. Price mismatch warnings mean Google found a different price on your page than in your product data.
- Shipping and returns: make sure shipping and return settings exist in Merchant Center as well as in Shopify (Settings > Shipping and delivery; Settings > Policies).
- Agentic page: in Shopify admin, open Sales channels > Agentic and review which AI channels and checkout options are active.
- Search like a shopper: in AI Mode, ask for one of your products by name and by category. Note the price, stock and whether a Buy button appears.
Why Google AI Mode shows the wrong price
Merchant Center is the data source for Google's shopping surfaces, but Google also reads your pages. Wrong prices usually come from one of these:
- Sync delay or sync errors between Shopify and Merchant Center. Check the Google & YouTube channel for product errors.
- Structured data that disagrees with the page. If your Product JSON-LD says one price and the page shows another, Google may use the wrong one or flag a mismatch. Hard-coded blocks in the theme and SEO apps are common culprits. Test the page with the Rich Results Test.
- Sale prices. A sale applied on the storefront but not reflected in the product data, or a sale that ended but a compare-at price that stayed.
- Currency and country. Shopify Markets can show different prices per country; make sure your Merchant Center feed targets the right country and currency.
- Variants. Each variant should be its own item with its own price and stock.
With a Buy button in the answer, a wrong price is no longer only a lost click: the shopper may be one tap from paying a number you never set, or from abandoning when the true total appears.
Keep it right over time
Merchant Center flags many problems, but only for Google, and only after its own crawl. AI Sales Assurance looks at the same question from the shopper's side across Google Gemini and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Copilot and Perplexity: it compares what agents receive with your live product page and flags price, currency, availability, variant and JSON-LD mismatches, plus misleading offer claims. It also tests the cart-to-checkout handoff and stops before payment. It is read-only. Run a free check, or see plans for daily monitoring.

What is Google's Universal Commerce Protocol?
UCP is an open standard announced by Google on January 11, 2026, with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart, that lets AI agents handle shopping from discovery to checkout. It powers the Buy button in AI Mode and Gemini.
Is my Shopify store enrolled in Google's AI Mode checkout?
In September 2026 Google began automatically including eligible products from US Shopify stores whose products are published on the storefront and available in Merchant Center. Check the Agentic page in your Shopify admin.
How do I turn off checkout in Google AI Mode?
Google says to turn off native checkout in your Shopify admin under Sales channels > Agentic. Your products can still appear; shoppers are sent to your store to buy.
Why does Google AI Mode show a different price than my site?
Usually a Merchant Center sync issue, structured data that disagrees with the page, a sale price mismatch, or a currency or country difference. Start with Merchant Center diagnostics.
Do I still need Google Merchant Center?
Yes. Merchant Center remains the hub for product data on Google surfaces, including AI Mode and Gemini checkout.
