What llms.txt is, and what it is not
llms.txt is a plain-text, Markdown-style file placed at the root of a website. It was proposed in 2024 as a short, human-readable map that tells language models what a site is about and which pages matter. It is a convention, not a standard that AI companies are obliged to follow.
Be realistic about its weight:
- Google's guidance on AI features in Search, published in May 2026, lists llms.txt among things you do not need for those features. Separately, Chrome's Lighthouse 13.3 added an experimental "Agentic Browsing" audit that checks whether a site provides the file. The two signals point in different directions, so treat llms.txt as low-cost housekeeping rather than a ranking lever.
- No major AI provider has publicly committed to reading llms.txt on every visit. Your prices, stock and product data still come mainly from your product pages, structured data and feeds.
So the goal is modest: a short, accurate file that points agents to the right places, and that does not contradict your store.
What Shopify serves today (October 2026)
Shopify now manages three agent-facing files for every Online Store:
/agents.mdis generated by Shopify. According to Shopify's developer documentation, it lists your store's UCP discovery and MCP endpoints, read-only browsing URLs for products, collections and search, your published policies, and guidance for personal shopping agents./llms.txtand/llms-full.txtmirror/agents.mdby default.
Shopify's changelog of May 28, 2026 explains how to customize them. Each path looks for its own theme template first, then falls back to agents.md.liquid, then to the Shopify-generated default. Merchants in the Shopify Community reported in May 2026 that custom redirects for /llms.txt stopped taking effect once Shopify began serving the path itself. If you set up a redirect or an llms.txt app before that, open yourstore.com/llms.txt in a browser and check what is actually served.
Headless stores on Hydrogen are different: /llms.txt is a route you control in your own code, and some headless storefronts return a 404 until a developer adds it.
Should you customize it?
Shopify recommends keeping the managed default unless you need different content. The default stays in sync automatically; a custom template does not. Customize only if you have something specific to add, such as:
- A one-paragraph description of what you sell and who it is for.
- Links to your main collections, size guide, shipping and returns pages.
- Facts an agent often gets wrong: which countries you ship to, whether prices include tax, whether you sell wholesale.
If you customize, you take on the job of keeping the file current. A file that mentions a discontinued collection or an old return window is worse than the default.
How to customize llms.txt in your Shopify theme
- In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes.
- On your live theme, click ... > Edit code. (Work on a duplicate first if you prefer.)
- In the left sidebar, right-click the Templates folder, choose New file and name it
llms.txt.liquid. To change all three paths at once, name itagents.md.liquidinstead. - Paste your content (see the example below) and save.
- Visit
https://yourstore.com/llms.txtto confirm the new content is served.
Two limits to know. First, the template runs with a restricted Liquid context: only the request and agents objects are available, so you cannot loop over products or collections. Second, the template belongs to the theme; if you publish a different theme, copy the file across.
The agents object exposes useful values such as agents.store_name, agents.store_url, agents.currency, agents.sitemap_url, agents.ucp_discovery_url and agents.mcp_endpoint_url. Using them keeps those lines correct even if your domain changes.
A practical example for a store
Here is a short llms.txt for a fictional tea shop. Each line below is one line of the file. Replace the content with your own; keep it under a page.
# {{ agents.store_name }}> Loose-leaf tea and brewing gear, shipped from Canada to Canada and the United States. Prices are shown in {{ agents.currency }}.## Shop- [All products]({{ agents.store_url }}/collections/all): full catalog- [Green tea]({{ agents.store_url }}/collections/green-tea): sencha, matcha, gyokuro- [Teaware]({{ agents.store_url }}/collections/teaware): kettles, pots, filters## Policies- [Shipping]({{ agents.store_url }}/policies/shipping-policy): rates and delivery times- [Returns]({{ agents.store_url }}/policies/refund-policy): 30-day returns on unopened items## For agents- [Full store guide]({{ agents.store_url }}/agents.md)- [UCP discovery]({{ agents.ucp_discovery_url }})- [Sitemap]({{ agents.sitemap_url }})
Notice what is missing: no prices, no stock levels, no promotional claims. Those change too often to live in a hand-edited file. Agents should read them from your product pages, structured data and catalog, where Shopify keeps them current.
Checklist: is your llms.txt helping or hurting?
| Check | How to verify |
|---|---|
| The file is served | Open /llms.txt; it should load as text, not a 404 or your theme's HTML. |
| Links work | Click each link; collections and policy pages should exist. |
| Policies match | Return window and shipping countries match your actual policy pages. |
| No stale prices or offers | Remove any price, discount code or "sale ends" line. |
| Theme changes covered | After switching themes, recheck that your custom template still exists. |
AI Sales Assurance includes llms.txt in its trust checks: it flags a store where the file is missing, alongside missing refund or shipping policies. More importantly, it compares what AI shopping agents receive with your real product pages, which is where wrong prices and stock actually come from. You can run a free full check without a card.

Does Shopify create llms.txt automatically?
Yes. As of 2026, Shopify generates /agents.md for Online Store shops and serves the same content at /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt by default. Headless Hydrogen stores must add the route themselves.
How do I edit llms.txt on Shopify?
Go to Online Store > Themes > ... > Edit code, create templates/llms.txt.liquid, add your content and save. Use agents.md.liquid instead if you want one template for all three agent files.
Can I still use a URL redirect for llms.txt on Shopify?
Merchants reported in May 2026 that redirects for /llms.txt stopped taking effect once Shopify started serving the path. The theme template method is the documented route.
Does llms.txt improve rankings in Google or ChatGPT?
Google says it is not needed for AI features in Search, and no AI provider guarantees it reads the file. Keep it short and accurate, and focus on correct product data.
Should I list prices in llms.txt?
No. Prices and stock change often, and a hand-edited file goes stale. Let agents read them from your product pages and structured data.
