How Shopify products reach ChatGPT in 2026
Since spring 2026, Shopify's Agentic Storefronts makes products from eligible stores available in AI channels including ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode, and Microsoft Copilot. Shopify says it is enabled automatically for eligible stores, and that Shopify Catalog structures your product data so AI can find and surface it. OpenAI's help center confirms that for Shopify merchants, product data is already integrated into ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog.
Two things changed in 2026 that are worth knowing:
- OpenAI shut down its original in-chat Instant Checkout in March 2026 and moved toward apps inside ChatGPT. For Shopify stores, OpenAI's help center says shoppers check out on the merchant's online store.
- Since May 2026, Agentic Storefronts has its own page in the Shopify admin, where you can see AI channel performance and which queries your products appear for.
Step 1: confirm your store is connected
- In your Shopify admin, open the Agentic page (listed under Sales channels > Agentic, or go to
admin.shopify.comand search "Agentic"). - Check that ChatGPT appears as an active channel. If it is off, open its settings. If "Allow Shopify to manage for me" is on, Shopify decides which partners are enabled.
- Look at the listing insights. Shopify shows signals such as description completeness, image coverage and policy completeness.
Eligibility is set by Shopify and can change. Third-party summaries of the requirements for ChatGPT list eligible products in Shopify Catalog, selling to US customers, completed store policies and accepted Agentic Storefronts terms. If you do not see ChatGPT at all, your store may not be eligible yet; check Shopify's Help Center for the current rules in your country.
Step 2: test what ChatGPT actually says
Being connected does not guarantee you are shown. Test like a shopper would:
- Ask for your store by name: "What does [store name] sell?"
- Ask for a specific product: "[product name] from [store name], price and availability."
- Ask a category question your customers would ask, without your brand: "best waterproof hiking socks under $30".
- For each answer, note whether you appear, the price and stock shown, and where the link goes.
If you appear for your brand name but never for category questions, the problem is usually relevance and data quality, not access. If you appear with the wrong price or stock, see ChatGPT showing the wrong price.
Why some stores do not appear
| Reason | How to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Store or products not eligible | Agentic page in admin | Review Shopify's eligibility rules; some product categories are restricted |
| Missing policies | Settings > Policies | Publish a refund policy and a shipping policy |
| Thin product data | Products list: short descriptions, no images | Write descriptions that answer real questions: material, size, use, compatibility |
| Out of stock or unclear availability | Products > Inventory | OpenAI lists availability among merchant ranking factors |
| Confusing titles and variants | Product titles, variant names | Use plain product names; name variants clearly |
| Crawlers blocked | Your /robots.txt | Do not block OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot if you want to appear in ChatGPT search; see AI crawlers and robots.txt |
Step 3: make your products easy to recommend
- Titles: start with what the product is ("Merino hiking sock, crew height"), not only a brand line name.
- Descriptions: include the facts a shopper asks an assistant about: dimensions, materials, care, who it is for, what it works with.
- Images: at least one clear product image per product and per main variant.
- Policies: clear refund and shipping policies. Agents compare these, not only price.
- Structured data: one accurate Product JSON-LD block per page that matches the visible price and stock. See the product schema guide.
- llms.txt: an optional plain-text file that summarizes your store for AI tools. See llms.txt for Shopify.
Then make sure the visit turns into a sale
When a ChatGPT user clicks through, they land on your product page or cart and check out on your store. Test that path: open a product link with ?utm_source=chatgpt, pick a variant and quantity, add to cart and go to checkout, then stop before paying. Confirm the variant, quantity and tracking parameter are intact, otherwise you lose the sale or the attribution.
Visibility is not the same as accuracy
There are two different questions behind "is my store visible in ChatGPT?":
- Am I mentioned? How often ChatGPT names your brand or products for the questions your customers ask. AI visibility trackers such as Profound, Peec AI or Otterly are built for this: they run prompts over time and report share of voice.
- Is what it says about me correct? Whether the price, stock, variants and links ChatGPT gives match your store, and whether the click leads to a working checkout.
Both matter, and they need different tools. A brand that is mentioned often with the wrong price loses the sale anyway; a brand with perfect data that is never mentioned sells nothing through AI. If your main concern is share of voice, a visibility tracker is the right choice. If your concern is that shoppers get accurate information and can buy, focus on data accuracy. We compare the two in AI Sales Assurance vs AI visibility trackers.
Checking all of this automatically
AI Sales Assurance runs these checks across your catalog: whether an agent catalog is reachable and returns results for real searches, whether price, stock, variants and titles match your pages, whether products have images and real descriptions, whether refund and shipping policies and llms.txt exist, and whether the cart-to-checkout handoff keeps the item, variant, quantity and utm_source or ref. It stops before payment, never edits your store and collects no customer data. It does not check robots.txt, so check that file yourself. Start a free check, no card needed.
Check what AI shopping agents see in your store
Free, read-only check: prices, stock, variants, structured data and links compared with your real product pages. No credit card.
Run my free checkFrequently asked questions
Is my Shopify store automatically in ChatGPT?
If your store is eligible for Shopify Agentic Storefronts, it is enabled automatically and your product data reaches ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog. Check the Agentic page in your Shopify admin to confirm.
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT shopping results?
OpenAI says product results are selected independently and are not ads. Relevance, availability, price and data quality are what you can influence.
Can customers buy my products inside ChatGPT?
OpenAI ended its original Instant Checkout in March 2026. For Shopify stores, OpenAI's help center says shoppers check out on the merchant's online store.
Why does ChatGPT know my brand but never recommend my products?
Usually your product data is too thin or unclear for category questions. Improve titles, descriptions, images, policies and stock accuracy.
How do I turn ChatGPT off for my store?
On the Agentic page in your Shopify admin, open the ChatGPT channel settings. You may need to turn off 'Allow Shopify to manage for me' first.
