What Copilot Checkout is
Microsoft announced Copilot Checkout on January 8, 2026, at the NRF retail conference. It is available in the United States on Copilot.com, with plans to extend to other Microsoft surfaces where Copilot runs, such as Bing, MSN and Edge. No international dates had been announced at launch.
- Payments partners: PayPal, Shopify and Stripe.
- Seller of record: merchants stay the seller of record, so the order and the customer relationship are yours.
- Launch merchants named by Microsoft included Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie and Ashley Furniture, plus Etsy sellers.
How Shopify stores are enrolled
Microsoft and Shopify said Shopify merchants would be enrolled automatically after an opt-out window. In practice, Copilot is one of the AI channels in Shopify's Agentic Storefronts, which makes products from eligible stores available through Shopify Catalog and is enabled automatically for eligible stores. Merchants began receiving notices from Shopify in January 2026.
Third-party summaries of the eligibility rules for Copilot list selling to US customers, eligible products in Shopify Catalog, completed store policies and accepted Agentic Storefronts terms. Shopify sets the rules and can change them, so treat your admin as the source of truth.
Step-by-step: check and manage Copilot in your admin
- In Shopify admin, open the Agentic page (Sales channels > Agentic). Since May 2026 it is a dedicated page that shows AI channel performance.
- Find Microsoft Copilot in the channel list and check its status.
- To change it, open the Copilot channel settings. If "Allow Shopify to manage for me" is on, turn it off and save first; then you can deactivate or keep the channel yourself.
- Review the listing insights on the same page (description completeness, image coverage, policy completeness) and fix what it flags.
- Confirm your refund and shipping policies are published under Settings > Policies.
Turning off checkout for a channel is not the same as becoming invisible. Products can remain discoverable by AI systems; if you need to keep a product out of AI channels entirely, review the product availability options Shopify offers in your admin.
Should you keep it on?
| Keep it on if... | Consider turning it off if... |
|---|---|
| You sell to US customers and want another sales channel | Your prices or stock change faster than your data updates |
| Your product data and policies are complete | You sell items that need consultation, custom options or approval before purchase |
| You already handle Shopify Checkout orders without manual steps | You need to review every order before accepting it |
For most stores the answer is not "on or off" but "on, once the data is right". An in-chat checkout amplifies data errors: the shopper sees a price and buys in a few taps, so a wrong price or a sold-out variant turns into a refund, a cancellation or an unhappy customer.
What to check before Copilot shoppers buy
- Prices and currency. Ask Copilot for your top products and compare the price with your product page. Check Settings > Markets if you sell in several currencies.
- Stock. Make sure inventory is tracked (Products > [product] > Inventory > Track quantity), so sold-out items are not offered.
- Variants. Each size or color needs its own price, SKU and stock.
- Sale claims. If a product shows "20% off", the discount must be real on the page and at checkout.
- Structured data. One accurate Product JSON-LD block per page; remove hard-coded prices in the theme or duplicate schema from apps. See the product schema guide.
- Shipping and returns. Clear policies; shoppers buying inside a chat cannot browse your footer.
- Product content. Titles and descriptions that answer the questions shoppers ask Copilot. A shopper who cannot ask a salesperson relies on what the description says about size, materials, compatibility and delivery times.
How Copilot compares with the other AI checkouts
As of October 2026, the main assistants handle buying in different ways. This matters because the same product data feeds all of them, but the consequence of an error differs.
| Assistant | How a shopper buys (Shopify stores) | Where you manage it |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Copilot | In-chat checkout (Copilot Checkout), US | Agentic page in Shopify admin |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | Buy button through UCP for eligible products, with Google Pay | Agentic page, plus Merchant Center |
| ChatGPT | Discovery in ChatGPT, checkout on your online store (Instant Checkout ended in March 2026) | Agentic page in Shopify admin |
When the purchase happens inside the assistant, there is no product page visit to correct a wrong number. That makes Copilot and Google's checkout the places where data accuracy matters most. See Google AI Mode and UCP and Shopify stores in ChatGPT for the details of each.
Monitoring Copilot and the other agents together
Copilot is one of several assistants selling the same catalog: ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode, and Perplexity read your data too. AI Sales Assurance checks them from one place. It compares what AI shopping agents receive with your product pages and flags price, currency, availability, variant, title and offer-claim mismatches, conflicting JSON-LD, broken product links, and missing refund or shipping policies. It also tests the path from cart to checkout (item, variant, quantity, utm_source and ref) and always stops before payment. It is read-only and collects no customer data.
